Shanti Stupa is perched atop Chanspa Hill, offering a breathtaking view of the Ladakh Valley. This stunning white domed monument, set against the crisp blue sky, symbolizes world peace.

The conception of this magnificent structure can be traced back to Nichidatsu Fujii, also known as Fuji Guruji, in 1914. He envisioned this stupa to commemorate 2500 years of Buddhism. Working alongside Tibetan and Japanese monks, as well as the esteemed Kushok Bakula, the Lama of Ladakh, they meticulously brought this vision of harmony to life.
In 1991, the esteemed Buddhist Bhikshu from Japan, Bhikshu Gyomyo Nakamura, guided the construction of the Shanti Stupa. Tenzin Gyatso, the Dalai Lama, inaugurated the stupa.
To reach this magnificent stupa, one must ascend 500 steps. However, the climb is well worth it, as it rewards visitors with breathtaking views of Leh’s charming township and the awe-inspiring peaks of the Himalayas.

Designers created Shanti Stupa as a two-level structure, and staircases wind around it for access. At the base, visitors can find precious Buddha relics and a photograph of the Dalai Lama, underscoring the stupa’s profound significance for Buddhists.

Climbing the first flight of stairs brings you to the first level, where you’ll encounter a Dharmachakra, evocative of the white band on the Indian national flag. This symbolic wheel, flanked by two elegant deer, showcases a luminous image of Lord Buddha in golden hues. Seated on a platform.
Ascending to the second level reveals a vibrant depiction of Buddha’s life journey. The murals vividly capture key moments. From his birth and his victorious meditation triumph over darkness, to his final passage into nirvana.
Each significant event is portrayed in rich, vibrant colors. Among these divine relics, the serene images of a meditating Buddha offer a tranquil ambiance. Inviting pilgrims to immerse themselves in the blessings of the Enlightened One.
